University research set to influence crowd safety at events

Buckinghamshire New University has published the results of a detailed survey into the management of crowd safety at unusual and outdoor street events.

Buckinghamshire New University was recently commissioned by the Royal Borough for Kensington and Chelsea – and funded by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) – to undertake the research, the results of which are “significant” for events (and event organisers) throughout the country.

Four events from around the country formed the basis of the study. Each was chosen to provide the university’s research team with a variety of sizes of event, different locations, different times of year in which events are held, different times of day and to afford a broad spread of the typical activity involved.

Information was collated by way of in-depth interviews with the key players involved at the events, through questionnaires about safety (carried out with members of the public attending) and from photographic and documentary evidence.
