Jobs to go at security firm

A CASH-sorting security depot which has twice been targeted by ram-raiders is to close over fears for the safety of its staff.

The Group 4 Securicor (G4S) Cash Solutions in Berry Hill Industrial Estate, Droitwich, has been raided twice over the last three years during which vehicles were used to smash their way into the premises.

The closure will result in job losses at the branch, which employs 83 people.

Your Worcester News was told by a member of staff – who asked not to be named – that staff were told on Thursday that 50 per cent of the workforce would lose their jobs.

“They have told us that they are phasing it over the next few months, and that half of us will go,” he said.

“They are looking for voluntary redundancy and going on our sickness records. We were told this morning and we are all in shock. We have been working 15-hour days to keep this place going and this is how they thank us?

“It is tough on the lads. We have been working silly hours and hardly been seeing our families. It is going to be very tough on us all.

“If we have to relocate, it is going to mean lots of extra miles to drive just to get to work. And when you drive around all day for your job, that’s a lot of miles.”

A spokesman for G4S Cash Solutions said: “We can confirm that after an extensive review process the decision has been taken to close our Droitwich branch.

“The safety of our employees is our number one priority and it is imperative that our business operates from the most secure facilities available.

“We have started a period of consultation with the GMB and staff based at Droitwich, with the intention of redeploying as many of them as possible to other branches.

“It is intended that the closure of the branch and transfer of staff and operations will be completed by the end of July 2010.”

He said that some staff may be transferred to branches in Gloucester or Birmingham.

The first raid on the site happened in November 2007 using two off-road vehicles. The second happened in March and involved a JCB. No members of staff were injured in either incidents, however it was not disclosed how much money was taken on both occasions, but is believed to be thousands of pounds. No one has ever been caught for either raid.

BLOB: A number of warrants were carried out in the Birmingham area on Tuesday, May 4, in relation to the raid on Monday, March 29. One man was arrested in connection with the incident, and later released on police bail while enquiries continue. Anyone with any information on the March raid is asked to call police on 0300 3333000, quoting incident number 716/S/290310 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111
