to stranded passengers…
Police have been monitoring a new internet scam claiming to offer thousands of pounds in refunds to travellers affected by the Icelandic ash cloud.
A series of fake correspondence, claiming to be from the Civil Aviation Authority, offers passengers who had their flights disrupted a £2,000 refund. It asks them to give information including their passport details in return for the cash.
DS Ian Jarmin, of the Economic Crime Unit with Lincolnshire Police, has been keeping a close eye situation, and has been urging members of the public receiving the email to report it to the Force’s Operation Jefferson anti-fraud campaign.
He told PoliceOracle.com: “Vulnerable people in particular can be sucked into these types of scams, so we are just increasing awareness as much as possible.”
The CAA has notified the Office of Fair Trading about the scam and warned the public of the dangers. A statement from the authority emphasised: “There is a high risk that any personal information received will be misused.”
