POLICE in Spain arrest more than 150 people per year for internet fraud and examine around 4,000 computers, email addresses and websites.
Around 70 major investigations take place every year concerning fraudulent operations such as phishing, credit-card cloning, fake sales and purchases, false promises of jobs, and fake on-line auctions, say the Technological Investigation Brigade (BIT) of the National Police.
Other illicit operations include viruses, piracy, child porn and 'grooming' of minors.
At the end of 2009, the BIT uncovered a phishing scam in Spain that had managed to swindle 800,000 euros out of people by sending more than half a million messages purporting to be from banks.
They also found hundreds of scams offering work, where potential self-employed persons were asked to pay a deposit for materials.
The BIT also uncovered a pirate video club with more than 500 customers and offering over 300,000 films, computer programmes and video games for sale.
To be able to buy and download the pirate films, users had to pay a 20-euro membership fee.
The operation turned out to be run by three young men, one of whom was under 18.
